Online Bible Verses - Psalm 90: Look forward to some real Hope and Change

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12NIV

I love to listen to old songs, did that a lot over Christmas break. Each song takes me back to a detailed memory. I can clearly recall where I was, who I was with and what we were doing.

Almost any song by Bread or Cat Stevens immediately has me in my Mom’s living room, where my sister Mary would have her 33 rpm LP’s playing on a stereo. Sunshine coming through the front window, somehow I remember orange painted walls. Did we really have orange walls? I think we did.

“Moonlight Feels Right” by Starbuck puts me on out on Oneida Lake in upstate NY, where we were fishing that summer.

“Slow Ride” by Foghat and we are hanging out with my friends Cameron and Binker who lived up the road. They were soccer players, so was I for a while.

Could go on and on with these, I know you have a bunch of your own. These detailed recalls are almost always happy. Oddly, the older I get the sadder I feel. Something has been lost. To me, what has been lost is opportunity to do great. Back then, it was about untapped potential and dreams. It was all in front of us. In most cases, I would think, we end up looking back with a mixed bag of feelings. Some regret. Can’t go back and change it. We long for a reset button, but know there is none. Some of the people in the memory scenarios are gone as well, making things more melancholy.

Is that how God wants us to feel? Yes and no perhaps. Certainly scripture would tell us that action or lack of it in our past may have consequences into the future. One of them might be regret. At the same time, God offers us grace and forgiveness. He also offers a future, in which there will only be happiness. Therein may lie the whole point. That being, He wants us to look with hope and anticipation of a great future. Don’t dwell on the past too much, rather, look forward. The best is yet to come. That despite the fact we get older and weaker and slower each passing year. God’s best comes after we exit these compromised bodies. So, serve Him in the meantime, and wait happily for the real party to begin. Told my wife last night as I held her, it would be just fine with me if the Lord came back and took us all while we were sleeping. No sad songs after that.
